The morphology of the island’s coast is directly dependent on the type of rock of which it is composed. Almost all the western and south-eastern coastline is steep with thick lava reaching down to the water’s edge.

 The northern and eastern shore is flatter, with a number of sandy coves. Along the southern coast, small bays (Avlaki, Agia Irini, Lefkos) punctuate the cliffs.
