The Chlorophthalmus agassizi [1] or green eyes) is a sea fish, the only European representative of the Chlorophthalmidae family .
Description
The most evident feature of this fish are the eyes, large, emerald green and with oval pupils. The body is slender, the head is large and flattened, with a prominent jaw . The first dorsal fin is short and high, the pectoral fins broad and the caudal fin biloba.
The color is bronze with dark bands, the belly is white with black dots. The area around the anus is black and houses a photophore .
Distribution and Habitat
It is present and common in the Mediterranean Sea including the Italian seas and is also found in both the eastern Atlantic Ocean (from the Gulf of Biscay to the Cape Verde Islands ) and western (from Massachusetts to Guyana ).
It lives at considerable depths, between 200 and 700 meters deep (in the Atlantic up to 1400 meters) on muddy bottoms.
Alimentation
It is carnivorous, it feeds on invertebrates, especially eufausiacei crustaceans .
Reproduction
Summer, eggs and larvae are pelagic.
Biology
He is gregarious and spends his time lurking on the bottom.
Fishing
It is caught in quantity with deep trawling nets , but its value is modest and ends up in the mixed minutaglia for fried fish .
