Description
The path begins at Nikia and leads to Avlaki, the southern harbor of Nisyros, once the home of a conurbation with several family dwellings and hot baths. In the first stretch, ruins of old churches can be found. Following a short stretch coinciding with the driveway, it continues upon Nikia lavas and ends at the monastery of Ag. Panteleimonas, above Avlaki.
This probably was the old road which connected the town of Nikia with its harbour, constructed or better saying ‘refitted’ by italians at begin of the previous century, this harbour was the nearest point to Tilos with, probably, the nikiates had commercial market. On the road you can find a lot of old structures and farm houses.
The road ends at the Monastery of Agio Panteleimounas, a little oasis at the southest place of the island
On 26 July will find every year the Fest of Agios Panteleimounas, with traditional live music, dances and community dinner, it will be the first “panagiri” of the summer.
The little pier is still avaible for very little boat, but with big caution, the sea is always rough and at the seabed rocks and sharp lava stones
Getting closer to Avlaki, it approaches Koumouli, a man-made hill. It is yet unknown whether this is an ancient arch-form tomb or merely an area to deposit the chippings from grindstone quarrying and production.
Observe the majestic black scoriae layers turning red close to the top, as well as the imposing andesitic lava flow constituting the cape of Avlaki. Rest in the cool yard of the monastery of Ag. Panteleimonas.
Explore the hot water coming from the hot spring in the Avlaki harbor, in the shallow sea water and in front of the last building of the abandoned village.
After visiting avlaki is possible to walk back on the road a take the path way to agia irini-pyria the path is not really visible and begins on the turn which seat on a cliff and is easy to recognize by a lonely tree on the way, from there is to walk on the slopes direction north-west until is possible to see from above the argos and agia irini and from there take the path Stavros-Nikia back to Nikia
