Middle andesitic lava flows of Nisyros (20)
These are observed almost over the entire surface of the caldera cliffs. They form the edge of the caldera and the slopes of the W – NW part of the volcano.
Limited occurrences appear on the eastern slopes and at the Avlaki site. This is a series of flows (approximately 10 can be seen) comprising ash-colored to light ash – colored basal andesitic to andesitic lava; their thickness ranges between 2 and 5m.Some flows exhibit characteristic flow structures (folding and laminar separation).
At the base and top of the lava flows, layers of ash – red colored scoriae are observed; these are created both by the liberation of gases on the surface of the flows, as well as by fallout .
