C. The Creation of Yali – Strongyli
Yali and Strongyli were created in parallel to the latest phases of creation of Nisyros
-
Approximately 50,000 years ago, successive underwater eruptions blasted massive volumes of pumice, thus erecting an underground tuff ring. Its remains are currently the land called the ‘lower pumice of Yali’ at SW Yali.
-
Then, the Agios Antonios islet was created close to Yali, while Strongyli emerged further to the east, through subsequent lava pours on the sea bed, later to emerge as land.
-
Approximately 30,000 years ago, following the latest major eruption on Nisyros, before the creation of its domes, a major eruption occured; their center is close to northern Yali. The pumice blasted capped Yali as it was at the time, as well as Nisyros, forming the ‘upper Yali pumice’ bed.
-
Viscous rhyolitic lava was then ejected from the center part; the domes and lava streams fed by it created obsidian, the natural volcanic glass and the perlite from NE Yali, around 25,000 years ago.
